Sensors and sensor-related technologies are a major research focus at Oklahoma State University. OSU maintains the highest concentration of Biosafety Level 3 labs in the state to support chemical and biological sensor research. OSU also employs more than 60 faculty members who specialize in the development of sensors and sensor-related technologies.  Progress of OSU’s focus on sensors can be seen in the increase in licensed sensor technologies, formation of start-up sensor companies, and growth in support from external funding sources.

Our international collaboration of sensor researchers work on the creation of new science, technology, high-tech companies and jobs through projects with strong commercial potential while providing solutions that effect our everyday life such as:

  • Remote detection of radiation in or on patients during radiation therapy or in difficult to access areas like sub-soil.

  • Detection of chemical and biological agents of mass destruction.

  • Development of a micro-optical chemical sensor that is smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. 

  • Imaging and detecting prostate cancer.

  • Development of an optical sensor that detects ClO2 gas concentrations during fumigation of mold and microorganisms in buildings. The sensor transmits results to a remote location.
