Laser Safety Training

Laser Safety Training is required of all individuals who plan to work with Class 3B or Class 4 lasers. We offer two training courses, one on general laser safety and another specifically designed for individuals who work with medical or surgical lasers. Training requirements are as follows:

For individuals who use Class 3B or Class 4 lasers for research purposes:

  • The course titled Laser Safety Training Course, which provides a broad, general overview of laser safety, is required for OSU personnel (i.e., faculty staff, or student) who plan to use a Class 3B or Class 4 laser for purposes other than surgery or some other medical procedure.

For individuals who use Class 3B or Class 4 lasers in surgical or other medical specialties:

  • The course titled Medical Laser Safety Training Course is required for OSU personnel (i.e., faculty staff, or student) who plan to use a Class 3B or Class 4 laser during surgery or some other medical specialty.

General Laser Safety Training Course

Individuals will view a series of PowerPoint slides, watch a short video titled Mastering Light, and take a quiz. Viewing Mastering Light is a requirement of this course. This training need only be completed once.

Medical Laser Safety Training Course

If you work with surgical lasers or other medical lasers, you will view the video titled Focal Points: Interactive Training for Medical Laser Safety and complete a series of short quizzes in conjunction with viewing specific training modules. This training need only be completed once.

To register for either training course, please fill out the Laser Safety Training Request Form and send it to the Laser Safety Office at 233 Scott Hall. Upon receipt, we will add you to our database and send you an e-mail message containing log-in instructions for accessing the training materials and quiz.

You will have 3 hours to complete either training course. If you do not complete the selected training course within 3 hours, you will be “timed out.” If you time out after 3 hours, you may lose your exam and have to take it over.

Once you have completed a training course, you will receive an e-mail message from compliance@okstate.edu, which will contain your results. For additional information, call 405-744-1676.
