Microscopy Laboratory

A unit in the Division of the Vice President for Research

Oklahoma Technology Park SignThe Oklahoma State University (OSU) Microscopy Laboratory is a multi-user, shared instrumentation facility for materials research spanning from nanotechnology to biology and medicine. Our analytical capabilities include microscopy via electron beams, force probes and visible light; nanomechanical and nanotribological probes.

The facility resides administratively under the office of Vice President for Research with additional support from the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, the College of Agriculture Science and Natural Resources, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. The Lab has served as the central research, teaching and training center for microscopy at OSU since 1977. It is located in Suite 104 of the Venture I Building in the Oklahoma Technology and Research Park, Highway 51 and Sangre in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The OSU Microscopy Laboratory is under the direction of Dr. Ron Van Den Bussche, Associate Vice President for Research and Regents Professor of Integrative Biology. The Lab has an advisory board consisting of faculty members who are available for consultation regarding research projects. Advisory board members are as follows, listed with their specialties:

Dr. Michael Grammer, Professor and Chesapeake Energy Chair of Petroleum Geology
Expertise: Characterization of micro- to nano-scale pore systems in sedimentary rocks

Dr. Steven Hartson, Director, Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Core Facility, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Expertise: Mass spectrometry, proteomics, HPLC, DNA sequencing, protein biochemistry, proteotoxicity

Dr. Myron Hinsdale, Associate Professor, Department of Physiological Sciences.

Services Offered:

Research Support: The Lab offers microscopy support for research projects by students, faculty and staff of OSU as well as outside entities on a fee basis.  A full range of services are offered including full service from sample preparation to final imaging, partial service which includes just sample preparation or support service in which the investigator performs the work using the Lab’s equipment.

Education and Training: The Lab offers a formal graduate level course in microscopy each Fall Semester which covers complete instruction in transmission and scanning electron microscopy as well as an introduction to confocal microscopy and atomic force microscopy.  Informal and personal training is done throughout the year on an as-need basis for individuals or small groups.
