Categories of Biomaterials Needing IBC Review and Approval

All research involving prions will be reviewed at a convened meeting of the Institutional Biosafety Committee. A biosafety level of 2 should be expected as a minimum requirement from the IBC, for research involving prions. Depending on the nature of the research, BSL-3 containment may be required.

The University has additional oversight procedures for research involving prions. Investigators should contact the Biological Safety Officer for more information about receiving approval to conduct research involving prions.
