Writing Data Management Plans
NIH Data Planning
Researchers should know that the National Institutes of Health require data sharing plans in investigator-initiated applications with direct costs of $500,000 or more in any single year, and NIH may specify a need to include data management plans in future responses to Funding Opportunity Announcements.

NSF Requirements and Guidance
Proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation must contain a supplementary document of no more than 2 pages outlining a data management plan (DMP) that describes how data generated by the project will be disseminated and shared. Proposals submitted without a DMP will not be reviewed. Some proposals may not require a DMP; however the proposal submission must provide full justification as to why no plan is included.
For more information about developing a DMP, visit www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/dmp.jsp.
