Biological Safety Manual and SOPs
Each laboratory should develop or adopt a biosafety or operations manual that identifies the risks and hazards that may be encountered, and that specifies practices and procedures designed to minimize or eliminate the risks posed to lab personnel when working with biohazardous materials. Personnel should be advised of risks and should be required to read and follow all practices and procedures outlined in the lab specific manual. The Office of University Research Compliance has organized materials into a user-friendly Biosafety Manual that should be used as a reference, along with the Institutional Biosafety Policy. Additionally, investigators are encouraged to consult the CDC’s Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) 6th Edition and the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules.
