OSU’s Laser Safety Office and Laser Safety Committee oversee the use of Class 3B and
Class 4 lasers on the OSU campus. As laser pointers are marketed and distributed as
Class 2 or Class 3A lasers, they do not fall under the purview of the Laser Safety
Office. However, recent studies suggest that some laser pointers are sold and marketed
as lower Class 2 or Class 3A lasers, but they actually exceed the specifications for
these classes and should rightfully be labeled class 3B lasers.
Please use discretion when using laser pointers and be aware of where the beam is
directed. The documents and links below may provide some insight into the mislabeling
and hazards associated with these seemingly harmless devices. Always contact the Laser
Safety Officer if you have questions about the use of laser pointers.
